Maroki Oud Buying Checklist: What to Ask Before You Choose

A good Maroki oud purchase begins with a clear description of the wood being offered. The name may be familiar, but the details of the batch—its size, weight, condition and any treatment—help you decide whether it suits your burner, preferences and budget.

Use this checklist before comparing offers. It keeps the pleasure of choosing a scent separate from claims that need evidence.

1. Clarify what the name means

Maroki, Marouki and Moroki are spellings you may encounter in listings. Ask how the seller uses the name and what origin is being claimed for the specific product. A trade name alone does not establish where every piece was harvested, which part of a tree it came from or how it was prepared.

If a particular origin or production method is central to the price, ask what information supports it. Avoid filling a gap in the description with an appealing story about rarity or age.

2. Look at the current batch

Useful photographs include an overall view, a close-up and a side view with a size reference. Check whether they show the stock being supplied, a representative selection or simply the product category.

Photos can help you judge shape and sorting. They cannot transmit fragrance, establish net weight or verify the wood’s full history. Lighting can also make pieces look darker or glossier, so colour comparisons between differently photographed products have limits.

3. Check size, thickness and net weight

Ask whether the pack contains thin flakes, thicker pieces or a mixture, and confirm the net quantity of wood rather than the weight of packaging. A larger pack is not automatically better value if its format does not suit your equipment.

When comparing prices, keep the declared weight and sorting in view. Two offers described with the same grade name may still differ in piece size and presentation. Ask what that grade means to the seller.

4. Ask about treatment

Request a clear description of whether the wood is sold as unperfumed natural material or has been perfumed, coated, soaked or otherwise treated. Record the answer alongside the product name.

Neither pale nor dark colour proves purity. A strong smell from the container is also insufficient to establish origin, resin content or whether a treatment has been used. The relevant question is whether the description accurately explains what you are buying.

5. Try a representative sample when available

A small sample from the offered batch can help answer a practical question: do you enjoy its scent under suitable heating conditions? It cannot, by itself, authenticate the origin or prove that one batch is better than every alternative.

Use compatible equipment according to its instructions and begin with a small portion. Record the amount, heat setting and how the scent develops. If a scorched impression dominates, stop and reassess the setup instead of adding more wood. Our guide to describing and comparing agarwood scents offers a simple vocabulary for your notes.

Keep the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from children and flammable materials. Do not leave it unattended. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns against burning charcoal indoors because it produces carbon monoxide; an open window does not make indoor charcoal use safe.

6. Read the terms before ordering

Check the delivery information and the store’s current policy for discrepancies, damaged goods and returns. Do not assume an opened or used fragrance product can always be returned. Keep the listing, invoice and any clarification about the batch.

For an OUDNNA order, review the returns and refunds policy before purchase. Ask about any condition that matters to you while the decision is still open.

Inspect the parcel before a full trial

On arrival, compare the label and contents with the order. Note damaged packaging, visible dampness or a substantial discrepancy in what was supplied. Photograph an unexpected issue and contact the store before consuming a large portion.

Some variation between pieces is expected in a natural material; what matters is whether the supplied selection matches the description and the variation explained before purchase.

Put the checklist to work

Start with the current Natural Moroki Agarwood listing. If you also browse Natural Kalimantan Agarwood, compare weight, piece format and product details before drawing conclusions from the names.

Common questions

Does an earthy scent prove Maroki origin?

No. It describes a scent impression, not verified geography.

Is dense smoke a sign of better wood?

Smoke volume alone does not establish quality. Focus on appropriate heating and whether you enjoy the fragrance, rather than trying to produce more smoke.

What should I keep in my purchase notes?

The exact product, net weight, piece sizes, treatment description, image status and sale terms. Add your observations after a careful trial. That record gives your next purchase a much stronger starting point than a general promise of luxury.
